If you haven’t heard, Joe suffered a serious stroke last September that left him totally paralyzed on his left side. He spent three months in hospitals and intensive care; and was released on Christmas Day to be with his wife, Kate, and their two young girls, Maryrose (11) and Maggie (8). Joe has faithfully pursued months of rigorous outpatient physical therapy, which continues. The good news is that Joe, whose doctors and nurses rave about his tremendous determination to return to full health and the bandstand, is regaining the ability to move his thumb and fingers, and getting around with the help of a cane. While this is exciting and heartening news, the hard reality is that there are still many more months of therapy, and many challenges, ahead for the 64-year-old singer, guitar/saxophone/autoharp player and songwriter, not to mention medical bills, prescription medications, and related expenses. That’s where his friends and admirers come in. “Thanks, Joe”, as the benefit was called, featured a variety of musical entertainment, a silent auction of a number of donated premiums, along with other items and collectibles for sale, refreshments and a full cash bar. As for Joe, he says he is counting the days till he is back on stage, playing and singing You go, Joe! |
